The need for L2 blockchains is waning – Vitalik Buterin
➠ The original concept of L2 solutions is no longer relevant due to two factors: L2's transition to full decentralization (Stage 2) has proven much slower and more complex than planned, and Ethereum itself is already scaling directly – fees are low, and throughput will increase significantly in 2026.
➠ Initially, L2s were conceived as "branded shards" of Ethereum – blockchains backed by the full security guarantees of the main network. But this model doesn't work: many projects are unable or unwilling to provide this level of protection.
➠ Some L2s openly state that they don't plan to become fully decentralized because their clients need control due to regulatory requirements. This is fine for business, but such projects don't scale Ethereum as originally intended.
➠ L2 should now be considered a spectrum of solutions: from fully backed by Ethereum guarantees to projects with varying levels of connection to the main network. Each user chooses what is important to them.
➠ Buterin recommends that L2 projects find growth points and create unique value by adding specialized features like privacy, developing non-financial products like social networks, or creating infrastructure for specific applications (dapps).
➠ If L2s do not provide a minimum level of decentralization (Stage 1) when working with ETH and other ecosystem assets, they should consider themselves separate blockchains with a bridge, not Ethereum scaling solutions.
