But heres the thing. Right below that confirmation, in smaller text almost missed it: Warning: Potential Loss of Bid if Block Not Awarded. Had to read that twice. Potential loss. Of the bid. Dusk: Proof of Blind Bid Delegation The Risk Warning I Almost Missed

Can't sleep. It's 1:47 AM here in indore ceiling fan making that clicking sound it does when it needs oil lying on my side with phone propped against the pillow. Been avoiding the Proof of Blind Bid Delegation task for three days now because the name alone made my brain hurt. Finally opened it tonight out of pure boredom.
Page loaded. Dark interface. Title at top: Proof-of-Blind-Bid Delegation: Risk and Reward Considerations. Below that two buttons: Explore Delegation and View Risk Assessment.
Tapped Explore Delegation first.
Interface showed a mock validator setup. Stake amount field pre filled with 1,000 DUSK. Below that a slider labeled Bid Amount ranging from 10 to 500 DUSK. I dragged it to 250 just to see what happens.
Submit Bid button turned from gray to amber. Clicked it.
Nothing for 2.1 seconds. Then confirmation: Blind Bid Submitted. Position in Queue: Pending.
But heres the thing. Right below that confirmation, in smaller text almost missed it: Warning: Potential Loss of Bid if Block Not Awarded.
Had to read that twice. Potential loss. Of the bid.
Scrolled back up thinking I misunderstood. The bid amount that 250 DUSK I just submitted can be lost? Like, actually gone? Not just locked or slashed for misbehavior, but lost if I don't win block production rights?
Tapped on the warning text hoping for more info. Nothing happened. Not a tooltip, not a popup. Just static text.
That bothered me more than it probably should have at 2 AM.
Went back to the main task page. Clicked View Risk Assessment this time. New panel loaded.
Three risk categories listed:
Financial Risk: Bid loss if unsuccessful
Opportunity Cost: Locked stake during bidding period
Network Risk: Validator penalties for downtime
The first one Financial Risk had a small i icon next to it. Tapped that. This time a tooltip appeared: Bids are consumed regardless of block award outcome. Unsuccessful bids result in permanent loss of bid amount.
Permanent loss.
Sat there staring at that for probably a full minute.
So if you bid 250 DUSK trying to produce a block and someone else wins because their bid was higher or they got lucky with the randomness component, you just. lose that 250? It doesn't come back? Doesn't go to the winner? Just gone?
The tooltip did not explain where lost bids go. Burned? Redistributed? Absorbed into protocol treasury? No idea.
Reminded me of something from last year. Was trying to get train tickets during Diwali rush on IRCTC. You book pay tatkal charges if you dont get confirmed seat the base fare refunds but tatkal charges are gone. Lost money for attempting. Same energy but with crypto staking.
Kept reading. Opportunity Cost section said stake gets locked during bidding epoch which wasn't defined anywhere I could see. An hour? A day? The whole epoch cycle? Interface did not say.
Network Risk was straightforward. Validator goes offline gets penalized standard PoS stuff. That part made sense.
But the bid loss mechanism that felt like the buried lede of this whole task.
Scrolled down further. There was a Reward Estimator section showing potential earnings if bid successful. Looked decent. 12 18% APY projected based on network activity. But right below that, in the same small font as before: "Note: Estimated returns do not account for unsuccessful bid losses."
So the 12 18% is only if you win. If you lose multiple bids trying, those losses eat into returns fast. Maybe you net 4%. Maybe you net negative if you're unlucky or bidding wrong.
That context was not in the big bold reward projections. It was buried in fine print.
Tapped Calculate Example Scenario button. Interface showed:
10 bids submitted over one month
Average bid: 200 DUSK
3 successful blocks awarded
7 unsuccessful (bids lost)
Total bid amount: 2,000 DUSK
Total lost: 1,400 DUSK
Total earned from 3 blocks: ~520 DUSK
Net: -880 DUSK
You'd be down almost 900 DUSK in that scenario.
Now maybe that's unrealistic. Maybe real validators win more than 30% of bids. Maybe experienced ones optimize bid amounts better. Task didn't provide data on actual success rates.
But seeing negative returns in the example calculator felt like the interface was being honest about risks in a way most crypto UIs aren't.
Clicked Delegation Options next to see if there's a safer way to participate. Panel showed you can delegate stake to existing validators instead of running your own node and bidding directly.
Delegation earns lower rewards 8-12% instead of 12-18% but you don't risk bid losses. Validator handles the bidding, you just earn percentage of their rewards minus their commission.
So there's an easier path for people who want exposure without the bid loss risk. But the task did not lead with that. It led with the direct bidding option where you can lose money.
