The USA expressed interest in using the energy of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant for cryptocurrency mining. This was reported by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, at a closed meeting with business representatives, according to Kommersant, citing participants of the event, including the head of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, Alexander Shokhin.
According to Putin, the Russian side is discussing with the USA the possibility of joint operation of the station located on the left bank of the Dnieper near Enerhodar. At the same time, as the president noted, Ukraine's participation in the management of the facility is not being considered.
Meeting participants convey Putin's words that the American side has shown interest in organizing mining on the territory of the nuclear power plant. Possible electricity supplies to Ukraine were also discussed - an initiative, according to sources, that came from the USA.
During the conversation, Putin told businessmen about the details of negotiations with the USA and Ukraine regarding a possible peace plan. He noted that Russia is ready to consider certain concessions, including a partial exchange of controlled territories, but emphasized that 'the issue of the ownership of the Kramatorsk- Konstantinovsk-Slavinsk node is not up for discussion.'
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power station in Europe and the ninth in the world by output. Russian troops occupied it in March 2022, and since September of that year, all reactors have been shut down. The facility is currently under the control of the state corporation 'Rosatom'. The station was built in the 1980s, modernized in the 1990s, and includes six power units.
It is noted separately that the family of US President Donald Trump and his partners own the recently established mining company American Bitcoin. It mines cryptocurrency using the facilities of the Canadian company Hut 8. In mid-December, shares of American Bitcoin fell by 35%.
