Blockchains are excellent at coordinating value and execution, but they were never meant to host terabytes of images, videos, AI datasets, and historical archives. Economic incentives play a central role. Storage operators stake collateral, earn fees for reliable service, and face slashing if they fail to prove that data is still being held. Continuous cryptographic challenges replace trust with math. Over time, competitive pricing emerges as providers optimize hardware, bandwidth, and energy costs. 

This transforms storage into an open market. 

For users and developers, the implications are structural. Instead of negotiating with cloud vendors or worrying about vendor lock-in, they interact with a permissionless network where prices are set by supply and demand. 

For Web3 ecosystems, it creates a neutral data layer that any chain or rollup can plug into. 

Walrus is effectively betting that cost efficiency is the unlock for decentralized data. If storing large datasets becomes cheap enough, applications that were previously impossible on-chain suddenly become viable: global scientific archives, AI agent memories, real-time gaming worlds, and permanent media libraries.
