Para entender mejor lo que está en juego, conversamos con Dr. Adrián Torres, criptógrafo y jefe de seguridad en un custodio institucional que ya trabaja con algoritmos poscuánticos (PQC).
Esta entrevista busca traducir lo técnico a lo práctico: qué viene, qué se está haciendo y cómo nos afectará a todos los usuarios de criptoactivos.
Q 1 — ¿Realmente la computación cuántica es una amenaza para Bitcoin y Ethereum?
Dr. Torres: Sí, pero no hoy. El riesgo no es inminente, es acumulativo. La mayoría de blockchains usan firmas ECDSA (secp256k1) o EdDSA, seguras frente a los ordenadores clásicos, pero vulnerables frente a un hipotético computador cuántico capaz de ejecutar el algoritmo de Shor.
Nadie tiene todavía esa capacidad, pero los avances son rápidos: lo que hoy parece teórico podría volverse práctico en una década.
Lo que más nos preocupa es el ataque harvest-now, decrypt-later: actores que almacenan claves públicas y transacciones hoy para descifrarlas cuando la tecnología lo permita. Esa amenaza ya existe.
Q 2 — ¿Qué soluciones concretas se están aplicando?
Dr. Torres: Lo primero es reconocer que no existe una “bala de plata”.
En seguridad, la transición será gradual.
Nosotros usamos firmas híbridas, combinando algoritmos clásicos y poscuánticos. De esta forma, si mañana aparece un computador cuántico funcional, las firmas siguen siendo válidas.
Trabajamos con los estándares seleccionados por NIST, especialmente CRYSTALS-Kyber (para intercambio de claves) y Dilithium (para firmas). Son los más maduros y auditados públicamente.
Además, estamos diseñando canales de comunicación internos protegidos mediante distribución cuántica de claves (QKD), para evitar interceptaciones incluso a nivel de fibra óptica.
Q 3 — ¿Esto impactará al usuario común o solo a los custodios?
Dr. Torres: A todos. El usuario que tiene fondos en una dirección cuya clave pública ya fue revelada debería migrarlos en el futuro a wallets basadas en esquemas PQC.
Los exchanges y custodios ya se están preparando: auditorías de riesgo cuántico, inventarios de direcciones expuestas y simulaciones de migración.
En el futuro, las wallets ofrecerán firmas híbridas de forma transparente para el usuario. Desde la interfaz parecerá un cambio menor, pero en el backend habrá criptografía completamente distinta.
Q 4 — ¿Y desde el punto de vista económico, qué consecuencias puede tener?
Dr. Torres: Enormes. El día que se anuncie que un ordenador cuántico rompió un algoritmo clásico, los mercados reaccionarán como ante un shock.
Las redes que no estén preparadas podrían sufrir hard forks de emergencia para actualizar sus esquemas de firma. Los activos almacenados en direcciones vulnerables perderían valor instantáneamente.
Por eso decimos que la migración a PQC no es solo un desafío técnico, sino una cuestión de estabilidad de mercado. Las instituciones que se adelanten a este cambio serán las que dominen la próxima década cripto.
Q 5 — ¿Hay proyectos blockchain ya trabajando con criptografía cuántica?
Dr. Torres: Sí, varios. Algunos experimentan con canales QKD combinados con ledger distribuidos para lograr comunicación absolutamente segura entre nodos. Otros, como los proyectos de blockchain poscuántica híbrida, usan hashes resistentes como SPHINCS+ o Falcon.
Incluso hay startups explorando la idea de “quantum-wallets”: dispositivos que generan claves cuánticamente aleatorias imposibles de duplicar. Falta mucho para la adopción masiva, pero los primeros ladrillos ya están puestos.
Conclusión: El presente ya empezó
El mensaje del Dr. Torres es claro: el “Día Q” no es una fecha fija, es un proceso. La transición ya comenzó y la comunidad cripto debe asumirla como una prioridad.
Migrar gradualmente, exigir transparencia a custodios y seguir las recomendaciones del NIST son pasos esenciales para proteger el valor de nuestros activos digitales.
La criptografía cuántica no es una amenaza: es la evolución natural de la seguridad.
La pregunta no es "si llegaremos a la era poscuántica, sino quién estará preparado cuando suceda".
