Man Shot and Killed by Federal Agents in Minneapolis Identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti
MINNEAPOLIS — A 37-year-old Minneapolis resident shot and killed by federal enforcement agents Saturday has been identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a U.S. citizen and intensive care unit nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs hospital.
The incident occurred on the south side of the city during a heightened federal immigration enforcement operation. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Border Patrol agents were carrying out a targeted operation when Pretti “approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9 mm handgun” and resisted attempts to disarm him, prompting an agent to fire what the agency described as “defensive shots.”
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a permit and had no serious criminal history.
But video and eyewitness accounts circulating online appear to contradict the official account. Some footage shows Pretti holding a cellphone, not a firearm, as he interacts with federal agents during the confrontation. Eyewitnesses and family members say he was attempting to help a woman after she was pushed to the ground when he was struck and later shot.
Pretti’s family and colleagues described him as a kind, community-oriented nurse, deeply committed to caring for veterans and social justice causes. They have condemned government statements that depict him as a threat.
The shooting has sparked widespread protests and political backlash, fueling ongoing debate about the surge of federal immigration enforcement in Minneapolis and broader questions about use of force and accountability.
At this early stage, details remain contentious and under review, with state and federal officials disputing elements of the narrative and calls mounting for a full, independent investigation.
