AIA đșđžđŹđ± | The U.S. has tried to buy Greenland since 1946 â and itâs never worked
In 1946, President Harry Truman made the first official U.S. offer to buy Greenland from Denmark.
The price? $100 million in gold.
The Cold War was just beginning, and U.S. officials called Greenland âindispensable to the safety of the United States.â
They even argued it was âcompletely worthless to Denmarkâ and said, âmoney is plentiful nowâ â so why not sell?
Secretary of State James Byrnes formally pitched the deal to Denmarkâs foreign minister in New York, December 1946.
The logic: Greenland would provide strategic Arctic bases for launching air counteroffensives in case of attack.
Denmark said no.
The U.S. still gained permission to build multiple military bases over time â but today, only one remains:
Pituffik Space Base.
For nearly 80 years, Denmark has rejected every U.S. attempt to buy Greenland.
Trump wasnât the first to ask â heâs just the first who didnât like the answer.
