Bithumb has addressed an incident involving an accidental airdrop of Bitcoin due to an input error during the distribution of activity rewards. According to Odaily, the error resulted in 620,000 BTC being mistakenly transferred to some customers, representing 2.95% of the total Bitcoin supply. Within 35 minutes of the error, Bithumb restricted transactions and withdrawals for 695 affected customers. The platform has successfully recovered 618,212 BTC, accounting for approximately 99.7% of the mistakenly transferred amount. Additionally, assets equivalent to 1,788 BTC that had been sold in Korean Won and other virtual assets have been 93% recovered. It was confirmed that none of the mistakenly transferred Bitcoin was sent to external addresses. Bithumb noted that its platform holds about 460,000 BTC in reserves, which is less than the amount mistakenly airdropped. The company continues to manage the situation to ensure full recovery and prevent similar incidents in the future.
