Besieged by Trump, the Fed is heading towards keeping interest rates unchanged

The Fed, the central bank of the United States, is heading towards doing next week what President Donald Trump detests: keeping interest rates unchanged and zealously defending its independence against the pressures of the White House.

The traditional meeting of the Federal Reserve of the United States will be held next Tuesday and Wednesday. And according to financial analysts, rates will remain in the range of between 3.50% and 3.75% decided in December.

The current context is different from the last meeting, not because the economic situation has fundamentally evolved, but because the president of the monetary institution, Jerome Powell, ended up openly opposing Trump.

Since his return to power a year ago, the Republican president has been calling for a strong cut in the Fed's rates, key to defining the costs of borrowing.
