U.S. President Donald Trump has once again stated the need to start negotiations as soon as possible for the potential acquisition of Greenland by the United States. He made this statement during the World Economic Forum in Davos, emphasizing that this issue, in his opinion, has strategic significance for the security of the U.S. and the entire Western world.
In his speech, the American leader sharply criticized Denmark, which owns the island, stating that Copenhagen lacks sufficient resources and capabilities for the effective defense of Greenland. Trump reiterated one of his key arguments, noting that control over the island is necessary for the United States from both a national security perspective and in the context of ensuring international stability.
According to the president, Greenland represents a vast and practically unprotected territory that is geographically and strategically closely linked to North America. He stated that the island is essentially part of the American continent and therefore should be under U.S. control. Trump also expressed the opinion that the decision of the United States to return Greenland to Denmark after the end of World War II was a serious mistake.
At the same time, the head of the White House emphasized that he does not intend to resort to military force to achieve this goal. He noted that the United States has never obtained what it desired without making demands, and added that while the use of excessive force could theoretically change the situation, he does not intend to go down that path. According to him, the issue should be resolved solely through political and diplomatic methods.
Trump also assured that the possible accession of Greenland to the United States would not pose a threat to the North Atlantic Alliance. On the contrary, he believes that such a step could significantly enhance NATO's overall security, especially considering the growing strategic importance of the Arctic region.
In conclusion, the President of the United States stated that Washington is interested not just in a formal presence on the island, but in obtaining full ownership rights over Greenland. According to him, effective defense of the territory is impossible under temporary lease or limited agreements, whereas ownership of the island would allow the United States to guarantee its security and stability on a long-term basis.
