Now these clocks show 85 seconds to nuclear midnight, the worst figure since the introduction of the "Doomsday Clock" in 1947.

"Time is running out. This is a bitter truth, but it is our reality. There are 85 seconds left until midnight. The world has never been closer to midnight," said Alexandra Bell, head of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

In 2025, the hands showed 89 seconds to nuclear midnight.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic indicator of the threat of global catastrophe, primarily nuclear, but also caused by climate and technological risks.

Its hands are set by an independent Board of Scientists at the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, based on an assessment of current geopolitical tensions, the development of nuclear arsenals, ecological threats, and other factors, showing how much time is left until "nuclear midnight" — a hypothetical moment of global catastrophe.

Seconds to midnight are not hours and minutes, but a metaphor for the level of threat to the world, where fewer seconds = greater danger.
