This is why I never trust copy and paste addresses without triple-checking.
A single small mistake can cost millions, and it just happened. 😬
A cryptocurrency user (0xd674) lost 4,556 $ETH (12.4 million dollars) due to one copy-paste error. Here’s what happened:
Users typically send money to Galaxy Digital at 0x6D90CC...dD2E48.
A hacker created a fake address called "sm" that looks almost identical since the first four and last four characters are the same, even sending small test transactions to make it appear legitimate.
The user tried to be quick and copied an address from their transaction history... which was actually the attacker’s address.
Result: 4,556 $ETH (12.4 million dollars) was sent directly to the hacker's wallet.
The lesson is simple but crucial:
Check every character before sending cryptocurrency.
Don’t rely on old addresses from your records, as hackers can spoof them.
Take your time. Cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible; there’s no "undo" button.
Even experienced traders can fall for this. Mistakes happen, but the smarter we are about security, the less likely we are to be the next victim.
